Sitkans turn out in record numbers for Super Tuesday

400 Sitka Democrats and Republicans cast their votes Tuesday evening for their favorite presidential candidate. Democrats held their caucus at the Swan Lake Senior Center. Republicans held their Presidential Preference Poll at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

Dinley hire divides assembly

The Sitka assembly on Friday evening (2-1-08) approved a three-year employment contract with Jim Dinley to serve as city administrator. Reber Stein, who recused himself from voting, spoke as a member of the public. He blamed the assembly's failure to understand its policy role for high turnover in the top job. In an unrelated but similar gesture, member Cheryl Westover stepped from behind the table to warn the assembly that the roundabout may return as a citizen initiative.

Interview: Dean Potter, statehood celebration designer

For anyone not familiar with Dean Potter’s graphic design work, just wait a few months. With the fiftieth anniversary of statehood just around the corner in 2009, the Alaska Statehood Celebration Commission is ramping up public awareness by putting the anniversary logo just about everywhere they can – including on our license plates. Former Sitka resident Dean Potter designed the logo during a juried competition in the final year of the Murkowski administration. It is striking and simple: a vertical blue rectangle with the big dipper and the words Alaska 50. Interview with KCAWs Robert Woolsey.
