Seiner, humpback tangle over herring set

SITKA, ALASKA A humpback whale became entangled in a herring seine during test fishing Tuesday morning (3-25-08) in Sitka. The vessel's skipper notified ADF&G, who notified NMFS, who dispatched local whale biologist Jan Straley to the rescue.

Due to Hurricane Oho, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for coastal areas of Southeast Alaska, including Baranof Island, from 8 AM to 7 PM Friday, October 9. Forecasters say residents should expect sustained winds of 40 - 55 mph, with gusts to 75. more
