Master carver visits Sitka

A top name in the world of Northwest Coast art recently spent a few days in Sitka this month (March), passing on his craft. Ketchikan master carver Nathan Jackson led a three-day Alaskan Masterpieces Carving Workshop at The Southeast Alaska Indian Cultural Center. The class was modeled after the 1980’s Ketchikan Area Carvers’ Colloquium, which brought together accomplished artists carving in the traditional style of the northern Northwest Coast people. Jackson and four students spent three days carving bentwood boxes with traditional hand tools. Melissa Marconi Wentzel stopped by to speak with Jackson and one of his students and brought back this audio postcard.

Benchlands planners look at cottages, land trust

Sitka residents collaborating on a land use plan for the Benchlands subdivision are emphasizing a diversity of home types, and an innovative affordability scheme. About thirty Sitkans attended last week’s (3-5-08) land-use planning meeting – the second of three such meetings scheduled for the Benchlands before the development enters the political hearing process at the Planning and Zoning Commission and the assembly.

Real vs. perceived safety challenging for traffic engineers

Traffic safety has been a hot topic this winter in Sitka. Several months' debate over a roundabout proved that there are as many opinions as drivers in the community. But even though that particular project has been thwarted, the state Dept. of Transportation continues to study traffic hazards in Sitka -- both real and perceived. KCAWs Robert Woolsey spent some time with a DOT engineer recently as she sized up a stretch of road considered to be among the most dangerous in town.
