Nat'l Geo rates Sitka among top historic destinations

SITKA, ALASKA The National Geographic Society has named Sitka as one of the world’s top historic destinations. The Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations has compiled a list of 109 historic sites including Ancient Nara, Japan, Sydney Harbor, Australia, and downtown Boston. Sitka is the only Alaskan community on the list. At 48th, it scores just behind Alexandria, Virgina, and ahead of Antiqua, Guatemala.

Sitka schools look to state to fund new standards

As it develops its list of legislative priorities, the Sitka School Board may back a plan to upgrade the Vilandre Field to equal Moller Park, in order to resolve a Title IX complaint. (KCAW photo/Robert Woolsey)
The Sitka School Board will consider asking the state legislature for almost $2-million in the coming year, in order to help the district meet newly-adopted standards. The board convened in its first regular session of the new school year Monday night (8-25-14). Meeting state education standards is the first of several costly priorities in Sitka’s schools this year. Also a possibility: A $1.5-million upgrade of Vilandre Field. more

Endlich: ‘Hot Jupiters’ and other planetary phenomena

Solomon Endlich recently received his PhD in Physics from Columbia. He'd like to apply the "cathedral of mathematics" built for high-energy particle physics to planetary dynamics. He's currently a post-doctoral researcher in Switzerland, in residence this summer as a Sitka Fellow. Endlich and five other Fellows will present their work in an open studio, 7 PM Thu Aug 28 in the Yaw Art Building on the SJ Campus. more
