Interview: Sacred Harp filmmakers would rather sing

Erica and Matt Hinton spent eight years making a documentary about shape-note singing, and developed a life-long devotion to the tradition along the way. They'll screen their film "Awake My Soul" tonight at Harrigan Centennial Hall (7PM Thu Oct 21), and teach singing school over the course of the next two days during the Alaska Sacred Harp Convention in Sitka. They joined convention organizer Kari Lundgren and KCAW's Robert Woolsey.

Arts camp proposes "vision" for SJC campus

A Sitka Arts organization is putting together a plan to take over the campus of the former Sheldon Jackson College. Alaska Arts Southeast, which began its popular fine arts camp on the college’s campus thirty-five years ago, has proposed leading a consortium of state agencies and non-profits in creating a center for the arts and humanities.

A whale of a parade

Monday was Alaska Day, which commemorates the transfer of Alaska from Russian to U.S. control in 1867. It’s a state holiday, but the celebration of it is arguably biggest in Sitka, where Monday’s parade included the usual marching bands, flyovers and something less usual: a humpback whale pushing its way through downtown.
