SITKA, ALASKA
McClear was working on a short-term contract in Cairo to assist in closing down a media development program funded by USAID.

When KCAW reported on McClear last Friday, the Egyptian government had shut down cell phone and internet service. We spoke instead with Rich, who informed us that Suzi most likely would stay put in her apartment in an embassy neighborhood on an island in the Nile. Police had sealed the bridges, and the streets were quiet despite the proximity to the protests.

Suzi McClear now informs us in an e-mail that the US Embassy decided over the weekend to evacuate non-essential personnel, and though she was not an official member of the embassy, she was added to the list.

She was escorted to the Cairo airport, where she flew on Qatar airlines to Doha, then to Istanbul, and finally to Belgrade. Despite the relatively sudden uprooting from her work and the long trip, McClear writes “I have friends in the right places and nothing to complain about and much to be thankful for.”
