Burrell unofficial derby winner

The Sitka Salmon Derby is over, and Steve Burrell is the unofficial winner. Burrell landed a 45.6-pound king on Sunday morning to take the lead in the 56th annual derby, put on by the Sitka Sportsman’s Association.

Industry rep urges lower taxes to boost Alaska oil production

Alaska’s primacy as the country’s largest oil producer is in jeopardy without a better tax structure and development incentives. That was the message delivered by Marilyn Crockett, the executive director of the Alaska Oil and Gas Association, to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce this week (6-3-11).

Lady Wolves advance to softball semi-finals

The Sitka Lady Wolves overcame some opening-game jitters this afternoon (Fri 6-3-11), and advanced to the semi-finals in the state softball tournament with a win over Soldotna 10-2. The Sitka boys lost to Dimond in the opening round of the baseball tourney, and will play Kodiak for 4th place.

Angoon cub off to Montana sanctuary

A brown bear cub orphaned in Angoon is moving to Montana. “Pandora” spent the better part of May living at Fortress of the Bear in Sitka. She is scheduled to fly out this week with a team from Montana Grizzly Encounter in Bozeman. One of the owners of that facility, Casey Anderson, also hosts a show for the Nat Geo Wild network called “Expedition Wild.”

Sitkans dedicate ballfield to fallen USCG airman

Last July, many in Alaska were rocked by the news that an Air Station Sitka helicopter had crashed off the coast of La Push, Washington, killing three of the four Coast Guard airmen aboard. Last weekend, one of the men lost in that accident was honored by having a soccer field in Sitka named after him. A large group of kids, parents, city officials and Coast Guard families gathered to dedicate Krueger Field in the memory of Sean Krueger who was a coach, father, and volunteer. KCAW’s Emily Bender attended the dedication and sent this audio postcard.
