Thomas relies on experience to bring in Sitka voters

Sitkans took their first look this week at Bill Thomas, the Haines legislator who hopes to represent Sitka when district boundaries are redrawn in the Alaska legislature next year. Thomas, a Republican, has been in the legislature since 2004, where he’s currently the co-chair of the House Finance Committee. He addressed Sitka’s Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (11-30-11).

Last night’s regular meeting of the Sitka Assembly is not over. The Assembly went into recess at 11 p.m., as required by city code, after finding itself without enough time to work through the agenda. The meeting will resume at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Controversial totem pole returns to Sitka square

The pole was removed last year while state workers rebuilt a seawall and changed landscaping to the greenspace across from the Sitka Pioneer Home. It underwent restoration and was put back in place during a small ceremony Monday afternoon.

November snowfall hits new record

More snow over the weekend brought Sitka’s total snowfall for November to over 32 inches – a modern record for the month.The snowpack on the Gavan Ridge measured at 53 inches on Sunday afternoon. That’s more than the 44 inches reported at the base of the Eaglecrest ski area in Juneau.
