Bill Foster won’t worry about coming up with an “ice-breaker” at his next party. The former Sitka biology teacher visited Nome this month to witness the Coast Guard Cutter Healy as it escorted the fuel tanker Renda through the pack ice. Foster, who taught in Nome from 1969-1971, says “seeing an ice-breaker at work was on my bucket list.” Temperatures in Nome on January 14th, when this photo was taken, dipped to 20 below zero. The Renda’s fuel delivery is complete as of today (1-19-11). Next on Foster’s bucket list? Revisiting Cuba, where he first traveled to by bicycle in 1959.
