Kotzebue resident and recent Mt. Baldwin and Keefer Brown, of Wasilla (r) were Alaska’s honorees: Baldwin, for starting a nonprofit to combat teen suicide, and Brown, for fundraising work to rehabilitate seals at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. In addition to the all-expense paid trip to DC and face time with a sports superstar, Baldwin and Brown each took home $1,000.

Sitka Assembly chooses smaller electric rate increase

Sitka’s electric rates are going up, but not as much as they might have. The Sitka Assembly on Monday chose the smaller of two potential rate hikes, by a vote of 4 to 3. A household using about 1000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month will see their electric bill go up by about $8 a month. more
