Humanities can steer environmental change

Climate change and other environmental issues may seem like problems for the sciences, but at least one social activist believes they are problems for the humanities, too. Camila Thorndike studied Environmental Humanities at Whitman College, and now hopes to apply her unusual education toward resolving major global challenges. Thorndike is spending the summer in residence on the Sheldon Jackson campus as a Sitka Fellow.

Moran: Asking the same question through engineering and art

Pete Moran is an artist from upstate New York, and one of eight Sitka Fellows in the community this summer. Moran graduated college as an engineer, and worked on both aircraft systems and a driverless car. Now a sculptor, he says art and engineering are two ways of asking the same question. Graphic novelist looks at teen angst in “Eighth Grade”

The key to addictive comics is in the writing, not the art.That’s how comic book creator Sam Alden views his craft, even though he may be on his way to becoming a top illustrator. Alden is a 2012 graduate of Whitman College who is spending his summer in Southeast Alaska as a Sitka Fellow, in a new program on the Sheldon Jackson Campus. He hopes to use his seven-week residency to fully develop an idea for his latest work, a graphic novel titled Eighth Grade.

Coastal Zone ballot prop debated at Chamber

Alaska voters who might be thinking about passing up next month’s state primary should think again. The statewide Coastal Zone Management program – which the legislature allowed to sunset last year – is coming back as a citizen initiative. High-profile speakers on both sides of the issue were in Sitka this week (Wed 7-25-12) to put their case before the Chamber of Commerce.
