Welcome Rebecca!

Meet Raven Radio’s new Program Coordinator, Rebecca LaGuire. Rebecca is the daughter of Michael and Jackie LaGuire, was raised in Sitka and attended both Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka High School. She began volunteering at Raven Radio through the “Gender Equity Program” a non-traditional Teen Center career program in 1997. Rebecca attended the University of Alaska Southeast and then earned an Associate in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Seattle and has worked primarily in the commercial photography industry. Rebecca brings experience and skills in managing, training and scheduling community groups, project management, technical development and team leadership. After living briefly in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she recently moved back to Sitka and returned to radio straight away. We are excited to welcome Rebecca back into the Raven Radio family.

SEASWAP: How to stop a whale of a thief

Linda Behnken, the Executive Director of the Alaska Longline Fisherman's Association was joined by Tori O'Connell, the Research Director of the Sitka Sound Science Center, to provide an update on SEASWAP (The Southeast Alaska Sperm Whale Avoidance Project). As O'Connell explains, the project just secured $311,000 in funding to continue research on a sperm whale avoidance network this fall. The avoidance network will tag whales in the Chatham Strait black cod fishery and give fisherman devices to communicate where the whales are located. Downloadable audio. more
