Group wants input to improve Sitka’s downtown

IMG_0107-2Since the start of the year, at least four stores have closed in downtown Sitka. Business owners have long expressed concerns about the financial health of Lincoln Street. Now, a group of Sitka residents hopes to do something about it. And they want your help.

Coast Guard helicopter 6031 from Air Station Elizabeth City, NC, rescues fourteen members of the crew of HMS Bounty Monday morning (10-29-12) after the replica tall ship succumbed to hurricane Sandy.

Bear traipses through neighborhood

Police received at least eight calls over the weekend about a very large bear going through trash cans in the Indian River neighborhood.

Stedman speaks to Sitka Chamber

stedman010912smallState Sen. Bert Stedman made a pitch to keep his job to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 24. The Sitka Republican is co-chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and is locked in a race with fellow incumbent Sen. Albert Kookesh, D-Angoon.

Survey measures climate in Sitka schools

IMG_1711-1The School Climate and Connectedness Survey asked 66 staff members and nearly 450 students in middle and high school how they felt about various aspects of life in their school building.

Search for Sitka woman enters second week

fealaelgrantSitka Mountain Rescue reports Lael Grant, 33, was last seen at a local store on October 15th or 16th. More than 40 people have been involved in the search for Grant, which began Oct. 19.

Coast Guard monitors sunken barge in Sitka

barge sinks 1Coast Guard Sector Juneau received the report around 4:45 a.m. The Sitka Fire Department responded and set up dewatering pumps on the barge, but the pumps were unable to keep up with the flooding.
