While the Southeastern US was battered by severe Christmas weather, Sitkans enjoyed another day of brief-but-welcome sunshine. This is Mother Earth on Tommy Joseph’s Centennial Totem at Sitka National Historical Park. As photographer Hugh Bevan knows, it’s one of the best places to catch some late-afternoon rays.

Luis Alberto Urrea’s writing was rejected for 10 years before a New York publisher took his first book in 1993. Since then Urrea - currently in town for the Sitka Symposium - has won a slew of prestigious awards, and has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. more
