The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, or SEARHC, is the largest private employer in Southeast Alaska. Earlier this year, its new CEO reported to employees that the company took a $4 million loss in 2011, and that big changes were on the way to address that loss. On April 12, CEO Charles Clement visited Sitka and spoke to KCAW News about what those changes mean. He also addressed something that happened before he started work at SEARHC -- his January arrest in Anchorage.

Native leader, activist Isabella Brady dies at 88

A pillar of the Alaska Native community, Isabella Brady, has died. Brady passed away early this morning (Wed 4-18-12) at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, after suffering a fall in her Sitka home on Monday. At the time of her death Brady was the president of the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp No. 4, and a national advocate for Native issues.

Sitka wrestlers place at national girls’ tourney

Mt. Edgecumbe wrestling coach Mike Kimber helped three athletes at national competitions this spring. Sydnee Kimber (6th grade, Blatchley) took third in 120 lbs, and Deirdre Creed (Soph, MEHS) took 9th at 108 lbs in the US Girls Wrestling Association tourney in Ypsilanti, MI. Sitka High junior Darin Davis went 3-2 at 109 lbs in the boys tournament in Virginia Beach.

Sitka voting precincts could merge, move

Under the plan, Sitkans would vote at two precincts, both of which would be located at Centennial Hall. Right now, voters head to four locations throughout town to cast their ballots. The change would begin with the statewide primary in August.
