Bes Young: The art of aging

Bessie Young is a Sitka Fellow originally from New Jersey, who’s been studying for her Master’s Degree in Ireland. She’s been documenting dementia in elderly women since her undergraduate years. “If you are comfortable with a difficult topic, that’s an area you should really pursue and help people deal with. I deal with it myself through my artwork,” she says. Young will use her seven weeks in Sitka to continue work on her Master’s project. She plans to spend time in Sitka’s senior care facilities, getting to know the residents.

Episcopal leader talks conflict, faith during Sitka stop

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori is also a pilot and former oceanographer. During a stop in Sitka, she had a chance to meet relatives of both Jack Calvin and Ed Ricketts. They are co-authors of Between Pacific Tides, a book that redefined marine biology. She also sat down for an interview with KCAW.

City offers reward after statue, trees vandalized

The City of Sitka wants to know who vandalized the statue of Alexander Baranov in front of Centennial Hall, and it’s willing to pay to find out. Police say someone took a bladed instrument and made seven cuts into the top of Baranov’s head. The vandal also struck the statue on the bridge of the nose.

Theater camp’s ‘Seussical’ to run Fri, Sat in Sitka

W.T. McRae selected Seussical the Musical for this year's Musical Theater camp. He directs the show, which opens this Friday night (7PM Fri Jul 26, 2PM & 7PM Sat Jul 27, Sitka Performing Arts Center, $20/$15 students and seniors). With Megan Wright, who stars as The Cat in the Hat.

Scotchmer defends Alpine Run title, breaks own record

Two new records were set this weekend in Sitka’s Alpine Adventure Run. Emily de La Bruyere won for the women and set a record, with a time of one hour, 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Second place for women went to Tasha Folsom, at one hour, 23 minutes and 57 seconds.
