Board takes ‘different slant’ on school funding request

The Sitka School Board is revising its capital funding request for the coming year, in the hope of finding some money in an unfriendly legislative environment. The board held a work session earlier this week (11-19-13) and decided that, rather than pursuing large construction projects, they'd seek additional money to support the transition to Alaska’s version of the “Common Core” standards.

New map shows likely tsunami flood zones

In the back of most Sitkans’ mind is this question: When the big wave comes, will my house be under water? Researchers at the Alaska Earthquake Information Center have an answer, of sorts. This month, they released a new map outlining which parts of Sitka would be affected by a major tsunami.

After a warm autumn, winter comes in a hurry

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Sitka and Port Alexander, in effect until 6am Thursday. The forecast calls for 7 to 11 inches of snow Wednesday night, turning into rain on Thursday.

Lady Braves Volleyball just shy of fourth crown

Mt. Edgecumbe Volleyball coach Rich Calkins, and juniors Taryn White (Hoonah) and Renatta Olson (Golovin), recount the team's tough loss to Grace Christian in the state finals. The Lady Braves Volleyball team has been in the state championship match the last four years, and won three times.
