I’m Rachel Moreno and I am running for Tribal Council for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. This will be my fourth term if elected.

My Tlingit name is Daashoo.  I am of the L’eeneidí (Dog Salmon) Clan.  And I’m a child of the Shangukeidí (Thunderbird) Clan.

My mother’s clan is Raven from the Big Dipper House in Auke Bay near Juneau. My father was Eagle-Killer Whale, or Kaawaantaan, from Yakutat.

For Tribal Council, I believe I bring a lot of experience in business. I have a lot of years in business. I have a lot of years in public service. It’s a value that I was taught by my mother and father.

I feel that service to people is more important than being called a leader.

My family is most important to me. I have a large extended family here in Sitka and abroad and I’ve had a lot of encouragement and inspiration from my family more so than challenges and the few challenges that I have had gave me a great sense of awareness for the struggles that some of our tribal citizens might be facing today and that compassion and drive to help has been instilled in my whole family. It has been for many generations. I am grateful for that.

I appreciate the community we live in, the people we live with, and the society that we’re a part of.

Our culture is what drives so many of us here in Sitka. The perpetuation of our culture, support of our language in schools, and teaching our language to our children is the way that we will sustain who we are. I want to support that. I always vote for funding opportunities that perpetuate that ability to teach our young children the value of our language and in turn, the value of our culture.

I would appreciate your vote in giving me more time on Council. Thank you.

Candidate statements are a listener service of Raven Radio. All candidates have been given the opportunity to publish a statement.

Tribal Citizens can visit the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi between 8 AM and 8 PM on Election Day, November 11th to vote. Absentee ballots are available at the Sikta Tribe of Alaska.
