A Sitka High School freshman was medevacked to Harborview Hospital in Seattle after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening (1-23-15).

15-year old Cody Bergman is in stable condition, according to close family friends, and he is responsive. However, doctors are keeping him sedated while they assess the extent of his injuries.

Sitka Fire Chief Dave Miller says Bergman was riding his mountain bike inbound on Halibut Point Road at 5:20 PM Friday, and attempted to cross traffic at Peterson St., across from McDonald’s restaurant. He was struck by an outbound pickup truck.

The driver of the truck remained on scene. Miller says EMS personnel transported Bergman to the hospital within 7 minutes of their arrival.

Miller says Bergman was wearing a helmet. Neither it or the bike appeared heavily damaged.

A fundraiser dinner for at the Elks Lodge for the Bergman family is being planned.

Miller reminds all drivers and cyclists to exercise special care on dark winter evenings — and he encourages cyclists to both wear reflective gear and use lights.
