The Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery is just 900 tons away from its harvest target for the season.

Seiners landed about 3,000 tons over the weekend, and an estimated 800 tons on Monday (3-23-15). That brings the total harvest to just about 7800 tons. This year’s quota is just over 8700 tons.

The fleet, which is working as a co-op this year, has been fishing daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the northwest area of Sitka Sound.

Alaska Department of Fish & Game biologist Dave Gordon said he expects fishing to continue at least into tomorrow / Wednesday (3-25-15).
