Sitka police are warning the public about a possible wounded bear in the Starrigavan area.

In a news release, police state that a Sitka man called dispatch this morning (Wed 5-6-15) at about 8 AM to report that a bear had chased his dog near the boardwalk, and then charged him.

The man reportedly fired a handgun at the bear, which then ran away.

Police officers and Alaska Wildlife troopers searched the area but found no sign of the bear or evidence that it had been wounded.

Warning signs have been posted at the trailheads, and officers will maintain patrols in the area.

The public is advised to be cautious and “bear aware” while using the Starrigavan trail system.
