Two people were treated for minor injuries after their home caught fire Monday afternoon (5-18-15) in Sitka.

Fire chief Dave Miller says firefighters responded shortly after 4 PM to a duplex on Peterson Street, near Sitka High School.

Miller says heavy smoke was pouring from the house, but the fire was confined to one bedroom, and firefighters put it down quickly from inside the building.

Two occupants were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Miller says only the one room sustained fire damage. Elsewhere there was little smoke or heat damage — all of which could be managed with “a good cleaning.” He guessed that total damage to the structure would amount to around $75,000.

This is Sitka’s second major house fire in just under two weeks. A Sawmill Creek Road home sustained heavy damage in a blaze earlier in the month. The residents were not home at the time, and Good Samaritans rescued the pets.
