Chris Washko, the Student Success Center Manager at the University of Alaska Southeast, talks about the university’s participation in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), an exchange of 75 Americans and 75 German professionals.

For the first year, Sitka will be a host site for one of these students, a Bavarian resident named Alexander who is working in IT. Washko gives a glimpse inside Alexander’s life in Sitka and prerequisites for a potential host family. Alexander will arrive in late August of this year. German students from CBYX are also hosted at Kenai Peninsula College and Prince Williams Sound Community College.

The fellowship is funded by the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag and is open to candidates in all career fields who are interested in a year of cultural exchange. The funding covers round trip airfare and tuition.
