An injured hunter was medevaced from Pybus Bay, 50 miles east of Sitka Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Air Station Sitka public affairs officer Ray Jamros said the the 37-year old man was cleaning a deer when he cut through his boot and hit an artery in his ankle. Jamros said the man was able to tie a tourniquet around the injury and hike out to his fishing vessel.

According to a Coast Guard press release, the injured man radioed Coast Guard Sector Juneau for help from his fishing vessl in Pybus Bay. After consulting with an on-duty surgeon, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka was launched, along with a medium response boat from Juneau.

The Jayhawk crew hoisted the injured man up into the helicopter and transported him back to Sitka for treatment.

According to the Coast Guard, weather on scene was 12-mph winds with 1-foot seas.
