Edited 2/25/2019 4:45 p.m. – A previous version of this post stated the deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 28. However, that date and the deadline fall on Thursday of this week.

The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association has expanded their Crewmember Apprenticeship Program for the 2019 season after being awarded a $142,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife foundation.

KCAW’s Erin Fulton was joined by Tracy Sylvester and Tara Racine of ALFA to discuss the apprenticeship program on this Morning Interview. They say the program is meant to attract young entrants to the fishing industry in Alaska and prepare them for their first professional fishing experience by providing resources and instruction through experienced skippers.

The application deadline for interested deckhands is Thursday, Feb. 28, and is available online on ALFA’s website. Skippers are also encouraged to apply as mentors. For more information, call ALFA at 747 3400 or email alfa.outreach@gmail.com
