Fellowship of the Bling

Friday, May 16, 2014, was Emily Forman's last day on the job as KCAW's Post-Graduate Fellow in Community Journalism (aka "Winter Fellow"). Over the past nine months she's reported on just about everything that makes Sitka the interesting community it is: the subsistence herring harvest, locally-sourced school lunches, the Orthodox Church, to name just a few. And it's not just us she's impressed. Emily is spending her last week in town developing her story on birds and airport safety into a feature for National Public Radio's All Things Considered.

KCAW's Robert Woolsey and Emily Forman captured first place for Raven Radio in the Corporate Division of the 30th Annual Julie Hughes Triathlon on Saturday (5-17-14). JHT veteran Woolsey, team captain and lead strategist, anchored the bicycle leg, and opted to put Forman, a 28-year-old former collegiate swimmer in the pool and on the running course. The tactic worked: KCAW's main rivals all fled the division leaving the Ravens a clear path to the championship.

School sexual assault case in hands of jury

The defense rested its case Friday afternoon (5-17-14) in the sexual assault trial of former Blatchley Middle School principal Joe Robidou. The case is now with the jury. KCAW’s Robert Woolsey attended all the proceedings over the week. He discussed the major issues of the case with Emily Forman during Raven Radio's live newscast that evening.

Good reporters are made, not born. Once a year journalists across the state convene at the Alaska Press Club conference to discuss literally everything under the bright Anchorage sun. This year, NPR's Western Bureau chief Jason DeRose and business reporter Sonari Glinton spent two days in workshops with reporters teaching the craft of broadcast journalism.
