Shannon Haugland’s Island has no monkey business

Shannon Haugland arrived in 1990 to work at The Sitka Daily Sentinel and has lived here ever since. She enjoys movies, old jazz and and her family of friends here in town. Shannon was our guest castaway on Friday, January 14th and brought the ten songs that she would choose to have if stranded on an island, perhaps forever. She would also choose crepes as her one dessert since the island is, after all deserted. Shannon's ten songs, a recording of the show and a link to her crepe recipe are below. Read More

Deserted Island dead(a)head

You may have seen Dan Gunn behind the counter at the Hames Center working as an Americorp Volunteer for the last six months. But you may not know that Dan is a deadhead and while he's never seen The Grateful Dead perform live (owing to the fact that he was eight years old when Jerry Garcia passed away) he grew up listening to bootleg tapes and the music stirs his soul. Dan was the castaway on Deserted Island on the 24th of January, 2014. Here is a recording of the show, his list of 10 songs he would choose to have while stranded, perhaps forever, and the one dessert he would have with him, since it is after all a deserted island. A tapity tap island

Cheryl Vastola didn't hesitate when asked what kind of island she had washed up on..."sandy with a flat rock right by the water." We found out later that rock was the perfect place to practice her tap dancing. Cheryl was the castaway on Friday, January 17th. Here is a recording of the program, her list of 10 songs and the dessert she would bring with her, because it is after all a deserted island! Read More

She also selected ten songs she would choose to have with her, if stranded, perhaps forever. She also chose pear pie with streusel top as her favorite dessert. Kathy remembers her early years in Sitka, lip syncing as The Supremes (see below) and traveling across the country on the program.
