Keep on buzzin’

KCAW summer news intern Greta "Buzzsaw" Mart hard at work on her last day. (KCAW photo/Robert Woolsey)This week KCAW says goodbye to Greta Mart, our 2014 summer news intern, Greta Mart. Greta worked for 8 years as a professional print reporter in the Bay Area before applying to the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and making the leap into broadcasting. Greta filed stories for the KCAW News Department on her first AND last days of work (and many in between). A letter-writer to her newspaper in Martinez, CA, once wrote that "Greta covers the county like a buzzsaw." We made that nickname stick: Thanks for the hard work, Buzz! Good luck in your career, whether it leads you back to the Bay, or to Infinity and Beyond!

The board paints the boards!

KCAW’s summer news intern settles in!

140604_GretaMeet Greta Mart, KCAW's summer news intern from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism! Greta is thrilled to be back in Alaska for another summer of learning and nature loving. Exactly 20 years ago, as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, Greta interned for a summer with Alaska State Parks.

Fellowship of the Bling

Emily Forman delivers the evening news. (KCAW photo/Rachel Waldholz)Friday, May 16, 2014, was Emily Forman's last day on the job as KCAW's Post-Graduate Fellow in Community Journalism (aka "Winter Fellow"). Over the past nine months she's reported on just about everything that makes Sitka the interesting community it is: the subsistence herring harvest, locally-sourced school lunches, the Orthodox Church, to name just a few. And it's not just us she's impressed. Emily is spending her last week in town developing her story on birds and airport safety into a feature for National Public Radio's All Things Considered.

Ahemmm…

KCAW news director Robert Woolsey and news fellow Emily Forman strain under the weight of their championship trophy. (KCAW photo/Rachel Waldholz)KCAW's Robert Woolsey and Emily Forman captured first place for Raven Radio in the Corporate Division of the 30th Annual Julie Hughes Triathlon on Saturday (5-17-14). JHT veteran Woolsey, team captain and lead strategist, anchored the bicycle leg, and opted to put Forman, a 28-year-old former collegiate swimmer in the pool and on the running course. The tactic worked: KCAW's main rivals all fled the division leaving the Ravens a clear path to the championship.

Community Calendar Upgrades

community calendarRaven Radio's Community Calendar has a couple improvements! You can now see what is happening in other Southeast communities at the click of a button on the Community Calendar page of our website.  Also, to make things easier for our on-air announcers, one-time events are now listed in orange and recurring events in blue. As always, please submit event announcements at least two weeks in advance and allow 3-5 days for posting. Remember to check the calendar before scheduling your event to prevent conflicts!~
