It’s a big night for basketball in Sitka, even though no Sitka team is playing. This week Mt. Edgecumbe has been hosting the Region V Basketball tournament for 1A schools, and the championship games are tonight. Meanwhile in the 3A tourney in Ketchikan, both title games will be played tomorrow (Sat 3-7-15).
The Sitka Lady Wolves dropped the first game of the Region V Basketball Tournament in Ketchikan on Tuesday (3-3-15), but they still have a chance to advance.
The Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves have advanced to the second round of the state 3A tournament in Anchorage. The Mt. Edgecumbe girls defeated Nikiski Thursday afternoon, 49-39. Things did not go as well for the Sitka Wolves. The Sitka boys lost their opening game, 41 - 59, to the Grace Christian Grizzlies.
The Sitka Wolves boys' basketball team beat the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves to claim the Region V 3A basketball title. Mt. Edgecumbe's Lady Braves beat Sitka High's Lady Wolves to take the girls' Region V 3A title. For fishing families and other self-employed Sitkans, Affordable Care Act is a big deal.
The Sitka Wolves have won the Southeast region 3A basketball tournament. The Wolves decisively beat the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves Saturday afternoon, 62 to 45. The game was a rematch between these same two teams from the previous afternoon. In Friday’s contest, Mt. Edgecumbe trailed Sitka by 14 points going into the fourth quarter, but rallied, tied the game with less than a minute to play, and eventually won by 5. On Saturday, however, Sitka was a different team.

It was nonstop basketball action last week (Mar 5 - 9, 2013) at the BJ McGillis gym at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Twenty basketball teams from Southeast competed for state tournament berths in the 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications.
