Recently in Sitka, residents were invited to visit the library and sign a card of support for Joe Mille, a 2009 graduate of Sitka High who lost his right leg in combat in Afghanistan, and who is now in a rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland. The individual organizing the effort, however, is not in Mille’s family, or a member of his church. He’s J.R. Ancheta, the photo-journalist who broke the story.
A pair of recent Sitka High graduates had an unexpected meeting last week – in a combat hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Photographer J.R. Ancheta was invited to visit the 125th Stryker Brigade in Afghanistan last December and, on his last day, he also visited a combat hospital that has become famous for saving soldiers’ lives. While Ancheta was braced for the possibility that he might see some of his new friends from the Brigade in that hospital, he never imagined finding a wounded classmate from Sitka: Joe Mille.
