Ford Slack is currently superintendent of the Delta/Greely School District southeast of Fairbanks. She holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Oregon, has been an administrator in Fairbanks and Barrow. She’s taught in Australia and China, and served as director of special education programs for the State of Alaska.
Sitka Superintendent Steve Bradshaw says he’s worked with Ford Slack through the state superintendents’ association. Bradshaw says she approached him about the high school principal job in Sitka three or four months ago.
“I think that she feels more like she can impact students as a principal than she can as a superintendent,” Bradshaw said. “So I was excited to have her apply. I wasn’t sure she was going to apply, but I was excited to see her application there.”
Ford Slack’s annual salary will be $97,126.
Mary Wegner moves into the job of Assistant Superintendent beginning in August. She’ll replace Randy Hawk, who’s leaving to run Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
Wegner previously worked in the Sitka School District about nine years ago. She’s currently working as coordinator of technology for elementary schools within the Anchorage School District. Bradshaw says he’s glad Wegner is coming back to Sitka.
“She’s a great lady. Anybody that knows Mary, I think, appreciates the fact that this is an extremely bright person with a great big heart for kids.”
Wegner will earn $97,000 in the assistant superintendent’s job.
Other administration changes are taking place within the district:
Blatchley Middle School Assistant Principal Casey Demmert becomes principal of Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary. Bev Gillaspie is leaving to work in the North Slope Borough School District.
John Hedden will become interim assistant principal at the middle school.
Mandy Evans takes over as director of special education, following the retirement of Karen Macklin.
And Phil Burdick and Sarah Ferrency will share administrative duties at Pacific High School, replacing principal Kathy Blizard. Blizard is leaving to work in the North Slope School District.
