SE pool, archives, training center in bond package

A bond issue on Tuesday’s ballot would fund three Southeast Alaska projects. Backers say the Sitka pool, Juneau museum and library, and Klawock training center would serve more than their home communities.Proposition B asks voters whether the state should issue almost $400 million in general obligation bonds. The bonds, a form of loan, would be spent on school, library, museum and university facilities around the state.

Science center gets city loan to help buy building

An interest-free loan from the City and Borough of Sitka will help the Sitka Sound Science Center purchase its building on the campus of the former Sheldon Jackson College. The loan was granted at last night’s regular meeting of the Sitka Assembly, but after nearly two hours of discussion and debate, it almost didn’t happen.

District 2 candidates spar at forum

Reber Stein and Peggy Wilson traded barbs during a campaign forum today (Wednesday) before the Sitka Chamber of Commerce.Stein, a Sitka Democrat, and Wilson, a Wrangell Republican and the incumbent, are battling for the House District 2 seat. Petersburg, Pelican, Kupreanof, Elfin Cove and Port Alexander are also in the district.

Bears break into Pelican homes

A family of bears is making a mess out of cabins near the Southeast Alaska town of Pelican. A sow and two cubs have broken into about a half-dozen homes in the past five or six days.Harbormaster Dave Duffey is one of the affected homeowners in the Sunnyside neighborhood, about two miles north of town.

McAdams: Southeast power connections possible

Southeast communities should be able to connect their electrical systems to one another, and the federal government could have a role in helping that. That’s the opinion of Scott McAdams, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. CoastAlaska’s Ed Schoenfeld and KCAW's Ed Ronco interviewed McAdams.
