Gorman working to reduce cluster-bomb hazard

A Sitka resident has taken a lead role in the effort to reduce the threat of unexploded ordinance in one of the most heavily-bombed countries in the world. Mark Gorman was vice-president of Community Health for the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium until his retirement last September. He’s now the country director for a non-governmental agency in Laos working to assist victims injured by the literally millions of unexploded bombs remaining in that country from the Vietnam era.

Wood lab chief: Biomass heat tied to timber industry

The biggest barrier to providing biomass heat in Southeast Alaska may be reconciling supply and demand. Allen Brackley, the director of the Forest Service’s Wood Utilization Lab in Sitka, told the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday that it would be difficult to economically produce biomass fuels for the town – even if everyone were to convert to wood heat.

Assembly proceeds without mayor, for now

There is still no decision in who will be the next mayor of Sitka. Cheryl Westover, acting as temporary chair of the Assembly meeting, called a recess last night after the Assembly was unable to certify the results of the mayoral election.

Sitka's "wilderness champions" receive national honor

A longtime Sitka couple is in Washington DC today (10-14-10) to accept one of the Forest Service’s highest honors. Chuck and Alice Johnstone will receive the Bob Marshall Champions of Wilderness Award on behalf of the Sitka Conservation Society. The award will be presented by Forest Service chief Tom Tidwell.

Ceremony honors historic (and controversial) pole

An historic totem pole in Sitka will remain in place a little longer. High winds Tuesday (10-11-10) prevented the lowering of the Baranof pole in Sitka’s Totem Square. Despite the weather, a small crowd of clan leaders, tribal elders, and others gathered to commemorate the seventy-year-old totem, and to acknowledge the controversial role it has played in the community’s history.

Don Young bill would expand otter harvest

Congressman Don Young has introduced legislation aimed at increasing sea otter harvests and pelt sales in Southcentral and Southeast Alaska. It’s targeting a growing population of marine mammals that are consuming more and more shellfish in Southeast.
