“Mass wasting” event destroys popular Sitka trail

Mass wasting is not unusual in the Tongass – every so often large swaths of relatively young and exposed forest are toppled by high winds and slides. But the mass wasting that destroyed the Beaver Lake Trail on November 12 (along with causing heavy damage in Sitka's harbors) occurred in old growth, and two hikers were there to see it go.

Lake levels up, but diesel still needed for power

Utility Director Christopher Brewton says they’re trying to spread out the diesel usage, rather than draining the lakes and needing to use even more diesel power later. That strategy, plus recent rainfall and snow melt, appears to be helping.

Sitka Polar Dip 2011

Around 150 crazed Sitkans and "about ten dogs" (according to Rob Parsons, Sitka High's National Honor Society adviser) take the plunge on Saturday (12-17-11). Air temperatures were in the upper 30s. The water, a little warmer!

SCDC on new tack for affordability, sustainability

The Sitka Community Development Corporation is trying to rebuild momentum for affordable housing in town. Board chair Greg Reynolds says the SCDC has been surviving off of its savings lately, and has been exploring ways to generate some revenue. He asked the Sawmill Cove board of directors recently if there was land available at the park for a “materials reuse center” – sort of a White E for builders.

Herring limit jumps after ADF&G adjusts ages

Last year’s GHL was around 19,400 tons. This year, the forecast amount is about 29,000 tons. The 10,000-ton increase is partly due to Fish & Game correcting an error in the way it was determining the age of the herring.

ADF&G advises Sitkans to check pets for ticks

Dermacentor andersoni is not commonly found here but was collected this week from a dog in Sitka. The tick was not attached to the dog and the dog had not been out of the Sitka area, so the origin of this tick is unknown.
