Despite safety concerns, Sawmill board pursues quarry plan

Sawmill Cove Industrial Park will continue to market the availability of a quarry on its property, despite significant concerns over the safety of blasting rock so close to neighboring seafood workers.

Marine services center, sea-water heat pump among ideas at Sawmill Cove visioning session

Several residents who attended a Sawmill Cove ideas session emphasized the need to expand Sitka’s marine services industry. The current haul out at Halibut Point has a capacity of 88-tons – an average-size seiner. Many larger boats were forced to leave town for bottom work. Members of the public who testified urged the board to consider a haul out with a capacity over 200 tons.
