LIO chief demystifies legislative process

Sue Cotter, statewide director for the legislative information office, believes that there’s no comparable, non-partisan agency anywhere in the country. Cotter spoke to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (2-8-12). When an audience member asked if other states had similar systems, she replied, “We’re unique.” Cotter credited the success of the LIO to foresight, and to bipartisanship.

Wilson on Heart Month, school voucher bill

One of the bills that is generating a lot of public interest in the Education committee is House Bill 145, sponsored by Representative Wes Keller. HB145 is a school voucher bill that would allow state money to go to private schools, giving parents a choice. This is a strong movement across the nation right now, for many people feel that the public schools have failed. I’m concerned though, that it may be unconstitutional in Alaska to give state money to faith-based institutions.

NOAA Fisheries calls it "low-tide-oblique aerial imagery," but for the rest of us it's a chance to fly with with shorebirds. The Shorezone Partnership is now completed for the entire Southeast Alaska coast, from Dixon Entrance to Yakutat. Internet users around the world can "fly" the coast via over 1-million video captures, or download 178,000 high-resolution images.

BMS Jazz to host Valentine’s Brunch on Sunday

Blatchley Middle School Jazz performers Kaysia Whitmill and Miles Chadwick join music director Mike Kernin to discuss this Sunday's (2-12-12) Valentine Brunch in the Sitka High Commons. Brunch will be served 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM, $15 for 12 and over, $10 for ages 6-11, and free for 5 and under. Music provided by the BMS Jazz Band. A fundraiser for the band's annual trip to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

Fine Arts Camp finalist for national grant

This year, the grant program is expected to distribute a total of $15 million to dozens of arts organizations across the country. The Sitka Fine Arts Camp, which operates under the nonprofit Alaska Arts Southeast, is one of 128 organizations in 68 cities to make the short list.
