Gun range accident claims beloved father, husband

Tony DelMoral, 50, was handling a handgun when it accidentally discharged, police say. Bystanders and EMS rushed to his aid, but were unable to save him. DelMoral's family say they're grateful for the help of those nearby on Saturday, and the outpouring of support in the days since.

Forest for the trees

A new article in the journal "Bioscience" this month describes what many foresters have suspected for some time: The century-old decline of Southeast Alaska's yellow cedar forests is attributable to climate change. Decreasing snow cover over the decades has left fine root structures vulnerable to freezing, eventually killing the trees. Stanford doctoral candidate Lauren Oakes, who took this picture on Chichagof Island, is among a new generation of researchers looking at possible management alternatives for the dead forests, which represent both valuable habitat and a marketable timber supply.

Two for the road

Proving without a doubt that teachers "can do," Sitka Schools music directors Mike Kernin (Blatchley Middle School) and John DePalatis (Sitka High) open the Saturday night (2-4-12) concert of the Sitka Jazz Festival. The pair jammed with Ed Littlefield on drums, Peter Apathy on bass, and Bob Athayde on piano.

Randy Porter: Sitka’s beauty inspires great music

Portland-based pianist Randy Porter did not need much convincing to come to Alaska mid-winter to play jazz. He says Sitka's beauty -- even in wild weather conditions -- is reinvigorating. Porter met Sitka Jazz Festival directors Terry and Jan Lovett a couple of years ago at the Stanford Jazz Camp, when they extended an invitation play here. Porter will perform with his quartet tonight (2-3-12) and with his trio tomorrow.
