Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe faculty basketball teams outlived the clock Friday night (3-30-12) in a benefit game at the BJ McGillis gym. Students from the two schools have partnered in an effort to raise $60,000 for a girls' school in Afghanistan. Mt. Edgecumbe student Annaliese Moll said she didn't know how much this event raised, "but the cash box is overflowing!"

Dr. Katie Rodger is a lecturer at UC Davis, and a student of the life of marine biologist Ed Ricketts, who is known to the literary world as "Doc" in John Steinbeck's "Cannery Row." It was Ricketts' collaboration with Sitka writer Jack Calvin, however, that produced one of the most seminal texts on marine ecology ever written, "Between Pacific Tides." I must question why the Coast Guard will use all its considerable skill to castigate the crew of CG-6017 and single out the co-pilot, LT Leone, for blame.
