The second Sitka Sound sac roe herring opening will be at 11:30 this morning in the same area as the first opening, in the northwest portion of Sitka Sound including Hayward Strait, Promisla Bay, and parts of Eastern Bay.

Support group to address grief at any stage

Beverly Rivard is a grief counselor and social worker at the Bill Brady Healing Center. She and Willow Moore, director of Braveheart Volunteers, discuss a grief support group which will begin on Mon Apr 16 at 6 PM in the Pioneer Home Manager's House. Rivard says grief does not necessarily begin at the loss of a loved-one, and may manifest itself in various ways throughout your life.

UPDATE: 4,700 tons in first opener

Saturday's opening of the 2012 Sitka sac roe herring fishery brought in about 4,700 tons of the small silver fish. That’s the preliminary harvest estimate, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
