Herring hunt nets 3,700 tons on Saturday

Herring seiners in Sitka landed about 3,700 tons on Saturday (4-7-12) in the third opener of this year’s Sac Roe fishery. That puts the fleet at 14,000 tons so far, well below its goal of a record 29,000 tons. ADF&G has mapped nearly 37-miles of active spawn over the past week. Biologists opened a huge area in Salisbury and Krestof sounds to allow seiners to hunt for unspawned fish.

Herring opening at 2:15 p.m. today

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has announced the season's third herring opening. It will take place at 2:15 p.m. inside Krestof Sound and lower Salisbury Sound. It will not be visible from the road system.

Bishop’s House suspect injured during vandalism

Sitka police and National Park rangers are looking for a man suspected of vandalizing the Russian Bishop’s House. Chief Ranger Chad Corey says a passing driver – two Saturdays ago (3-24-12) – reportedly saw a man breaking windows in the historic structure at around 9 in the evening. The suspect used only his hands to do the damage, and blood was found on the scene.
