The Japanese fishing vessel Ryou-Un Maru lists after being riddled by 25mm explosive rounds fired by the USCG Cutter Anacapa Thursday afternoon (4-5-12). The Anacapa also conducted a fire drill on the burning vessel, before sinking it in 6,000 feet of water.

Traveling sea lion phones home

Herring seiners are not the only fishermen commuting long-distance to Sitka this spring. A half-ton Steller sea lion has been seen in and around Sitka’s harbors over the last few days browsing on the abundant herring. The animal, which has an innovative cell-phone tracking device, was tagged – just over a month ago – at the Bonneville Dam near Portland, Oregon, about 900 miles to the south.

Science mentors bring students into labs

A program in Sitka allows high school students to work side-by-side with scientists on their research. The Science Mentors Program, run through the Sitka Conservation Society and the Sitka Sound Science Center, puts three high school students in the field and in the lab.
