Sitka backs halibut bycatch reduction for trawl fleet

The city of Sitka has gone on record in support of efforts to reduce the amount of halibut wasted in Alaska’s trawl fisheries. The Sitka assembly this week (Tue 5-22-12) unanimously approved asking the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council to lower the cap on trawl bycatch when it meets in Kodiak in June.

Assembly updated on Sealaska lands bill, Redoubt selection

The Sealaska lands bill is still active in the US Senate, but doesn’t appear to be moving anywhere soon. Sealaska executive vice-president Rick Harris told the Sitka assembly on Tuesday (5-22-12) that the controversial legislation remains in the US Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests, where it’s been for exactly one year. The assembly also heard an update on Sealaska's selection of Redoubt Falls.

Young: Transparency makes good government “impossible”

Alaska’s lone congressman says transparency is the problem with – and not the solution to – good government. Don Young took advantage of the congressional recess to visit Sitka and speak at the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (5-23-12). Besides sharing his nostalgia for the days before television cameras intruded into the capitol, the 40-year representative railed against younger Alaskan’s comfort with government largesse, and their lack of productivity.

Competitors leave the starting line of the 28th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon in Sitka on Saturday (5-19-12). 102 people competed, from age 7 to... well, much older! The event was founded by Bill and Carol Hughes in memory of their daughter, Julie, who died of leukemia while still a student. Julie's swim coach, Suha Tokman, was instrumental in organizing those early events. Now back in Sitka, Tokman helped Bill and Carol start this year's race.

Sitka’s budget: Parks & Rec manager to keep job

It looks like Sitka’s Parks and Recreation manager will keep her job. A half-time employee at the customer service counter in City Hall can also tear up a pink slip. The Sitka Assembly last night (Tue 5-22-12) worked through next year’s municipal budget and made some tough cuts, but existing personnel were not among them.
