Double exposure

A perfect calm in the Sitka Channel Tuesday evening (7-3-12) gave fireworks-watchers a double-treat: starbursts mirrored in the still water. The $10,000 display (sponsored by Petro Marine) also launched on schedule at 11:30 PM, breaking a two-year streak of lengthy weather delays. Returning college student Caitlin Woolsey captured this image from a boat in the harbor.

Middle school upgrades underway in Sitka

A major renovation of Blatchley Middle School is in full swing. The $12 million project will see a completely remodeled interior in the building. Workers also are changing the system’s climate control and other mechanical systems. Engineers hope doing so will mean savings in the long run.

Medvejie half-marathon brings runners closer to land, each other

in Sitka, races bring a little something extra—a different set of universalities—and this June’s (6-23-12) solstice run at Medvejie was no exception. While 80 degrees and sunny is hardly a Sitka norm, the angles and curves of the mountainous horizon—all granite and forest and snow, more rugged and high than I remember when they have disappeared behind a wall of fog—are rarely around for other races.

Baby found in Sitka sink returns as adult

On a winter night in 1994, a newborn baby was found lying in a sink at Sitka’s Thomsen Harbor. Eighteen years later, that girl is now a young woman named Karissa Amrhein. She graduated from high school this spring and last week, she returned to Sitka.
