Aaron Swanson wants the City of Sitka to cut back on its spending. The 30-year-old resident is one of five people running for Sitka Assembly in this October’s municipal election. He says he had been thinking about running for at least a year.

Assembly candidates tested at Chamber forum

Candidates for Sitka assembly had their first test in the spotlight Wednesday afternoon (9-12-12) during a forum before the Sitka Chamber of Commerce. The five candidates made brief introductory remarks, and then answered a prepared list of questions from the Chamber, before fielding written questions from the audience. Hackett wants citizen involvement in major issues

Voters supporting Phyllis Hackett for assembly in this October’s municipal election have this to be thankful for: They won’t have to remember how to spell her name. The one-term incumbent didn’t re-file for her seat last year, but had second thoughts and opted to run as a write-in candidate – and won a partial one-year term. Hackett is one of five candidates hoping to fill three vacancies on the Sitka assembly.

Assembly approves $96.7M Blue Lake construction cost

The Assembly on Tuesday unanimously awarded a $92.9 million contract to Montana-based Barnard Construction. With extra money built in for contingencies, the total cost comes out to $96.7 million. That amount of money was well above engineers’ estimates of $50 million, and coming up with it will require a scramble on the part of the city.

Tote delivery

A helicopter crew from USCG Air Station Sitka hoists 19-year-old Ryan Harris from the blue fish tote in which he had drifted for over 24-hours. Harris was the deckhand aboard the 28-foot fishing vessel Kaitlin Rae, which sank suddenly off of Cape Edgecumbe the afternoon of Friday, September 7, 2012. Neither Harris nor his skipper, Stonie "Mac" Huffman had time to get out a mayday call. Huffan found a survival suit in the debris and managed to climb into it. He was picked up from the beach on Pt. Amelia about 10 miles from where the Kaitlin Rae sank. Harris, in his tote-turned-lifeboat, was spotted by another fishing vessel a few more miles to the north near Eagle Rock.
