FASD Awareness Day set for Sunday

Gayle Young is with the Sitka Neurodevelopmental Diagnostic Clinic. She says more parents are coming forward to have children evaluated for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, as the shame drops from this syndrome. This Sunday (9-7-12) is International FASD Awareness Day. Young says local professionals will use the coincidence to try and distribute information in churches.

Community foundation takes giving to next level

An old idea in philanthropy is getting a new start in Sitka. Lily Herwald is a grant writer and non-profit consultant. She’s been one of a half-dozen or so people meeting informally to discuss creating a Sitka Community Foundation. A reception is planned for Friday evening (9-7-12, 5:30-7PM) at the Pioneers Home Manager's House.

Resident phycologist will study Sitka’s algae

Nic Blouin is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Rhode Island. He's the first of this autumn's resident fellows at the Sitka Sound Science Center. He'll work with UAS classes on genetic studies of our local seaweeds, plus maintain an open door for any Sitkan who would like to discuss phycology. Trail, campground closed after bear attack

An 18-year-old Vancouver, BC, resident suffered minor injuries after being attacked by a brown bear sow on a popular trail near Sitka. The young woman was traveling on the state ferry with her family. The attack occurred on the Mosquito Cove Trail on Tuesday (9-4-12), about a mile from the Sitka ferry terminal. The Forest Service has closed both the trail and the Starrigavan campground.

Sitka Historical Museum curator Jackie Fernandez discusses the next community curating exhibit, "Sitka: Paris of the Pacific, Then and Now." Deadline for entries is Wed Sep 26, 2012. The exhibit will open Tue Oct 9, just prior to a three-day joint meeting of the Alaska Historical Society and Museums Alaska.
