He ought to be in pictures!

The Weather Channel's hit series Coast Guard Alaska was in Sitka again this week to film an episode on the dramatic rescue of the crew of the fishing vessel Kaitlin Rae, which sank off Cape Edgecumbe on September 7, 2012. The boat's skipper, Stonie "Mac" Huffman, drifted ten miles in his survival suit before being picked up; 19-year-old crewman Ryan Harris drifted overnight in a fish tote. The show's producers called the station an asked us to help re-create local media during the event. We did not have to twist Ed's arm to put him in front of the camera. Before coming to Sitka, he hosted his newspaper's webcast.

Gold Medal basketball fans hope to have one of their greatest named to the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame. Haines Rep. Bill Thomas formally requests recount in 34-vote loss to Kreiss-Tomkins. Small-boat fleet (vessels less than 57 1/2 feet) will carry observers, in partial program beginning in 2013. Winter weather, darkness create traffic hazards on local streets.

The life and times of basketball legend Herb Didrickson

Herb Didrickson is a lifelong Sitka resident, regarded by many as one of the greatest basketball players ever produced in Alaska. His friend, Gil Truitt, has nominated Didrickson for the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame – for the third time. Truitt, and former Division I player and veteran college coach John Abell make the case for Didrickson’s selection. Hosted by KCAW’s Robert Woolsey.

ANB basketball star on ballot for Hall of Fame

Fans of Gold Medal Basketball in Southeast Alaska are hoping to see one of their greatest players named to Alaska Sports Hall of Fame. Herb Didrickson played for Sheldon Jackson School in Sitka in the mid-1940s. He later dominated the Gold Medal tournament as a member of Sitka’s legendary Alaska Native Brotherhood team. But people who watched Didrickson play – and those who played against him – say he was far more than a regional standout. Nominating documents to the Hall of Fame refer to Didrickson as one of the finest basketball players ever.
