Afghan war reunites Sitka classmates

A pair of recent Sitka High graduates had an unexpected meeting last week – in a combat hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Photographer J.R. Ancheta was invited to visit the 125th Stryker Brigade in Afghanistan last December and, on his last day, he also visited a combat hospital that has become famous for saving soldiers’ lives. While Ancheta was braced for the possibility that he might see some of his new friends from the Brigade in that hospital, he never imagined finding a wounded classmate from Sitka: Joe Mille.

Sitka-based fishing reality show pulled from air

The TLC network first aired “Hook, Line and Sisters” on Dec. 29. The show follows the Anderson family as they participate in Alaska fisheries aboard their vessel the Memry Anne. Much of it was filmed during last year’s Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery.

Sitka copes with biting cold; warm-up coming

Temperatures were in the single digits for the second day in a row Tuesday. National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Lam says Sitka hit a low of 6 degrees overnight Monday into Tuesday. Windchills have reached -2 Fahrenheit.

O’Connell Brrrrrrrrrrridge.

The sun sinks behind the O'Connell Bridge Monday afternoon (1-16-12) on one of the coldest days of the winter so far. Temperatures dipped into the low teens in Sitka, and into single digits in communities farther inland. Cold conditions are forecast to last through the end of the week.
