Sitka campus gets $500K from Alabama donor

Carol Odess made the donation in support of Allen Memorial Hall, on the Sheldon Jackson campus. The building holds a number of dance studios and an auditorium. The building will keep its name, but the theater inside will be named in honor of Odess and her late husband, Jack.

Nanuck, the dog, takes a flying leap into Heart Lake near Sitka on Thursday afternoon (9-20-12). Temperatures throughout the region topped 60, with clear skies and light winds. Elsewhere in the state, however, Anchorage and the Mat-Su experienced their second severe windstorm of the fall.

Goat survey finds “glacier deer”

Alaska Department of Fish & Game biologist Phil Mooney was tagging mountain goats on Baranof Island outside of Sitka in late August and saw the unusual animal from his helicopter.The Sitka black-tailed deer is a buck, still in velvet. The animal is a very light, bluish gray. When a black bear has this kind of coloring, it’s called a “glacier bear.”
