Trailsong

The Trail is a new short film by Ellen Frankenstein, one of several commissioned by the Rasmuson Foundation to celebrate the work of its grant recipients. Frankenstein says The Trail is a whimsical, possibly mysterious short inspired by late night episodic-serial TV watching. It is a celebration of Sitka Trail Works, a nonprofit that, along with its partners, has literally helped change the ground we walk on.

Local alder tested in high school wood shop

The Sitka High wood shop is involved in an experiment to learn if young-growth timber can be made into high end furniture and other products. One of three class sections is using locally-harvested and milled alder in their projects; the other two are using traditional hardwoods from the lower forty-eight. Their teacher says his students don’t notice any difference.

Steppin’ up

Swimming doesn't end in Sitka when the state high school meet is over -- far from it. Sitka's two swim clubs, SEAK Swim and the Baranof Barracudas, packed the pool at the Southeast Championships in Juneau December 7-9. At least two swimmers made top-16 national qualifying times in their events.

Familiar faces appointed to Council vacancies

The Sitka Tribal Council has appointed two members to seats vacated after last month’s closely-contested Tribal elections. Former council members Harvey Kitka and Clara Gray have been appointed to serve out the terms of Dale Williams and Wade Martin. Also returning to the Tribal Council for one year will be former chairman Woody Widmark. Widmark was appointed to the vacancy left by Archie Nielsen, who has stepped down for medical reasons.
