The Assembly voted unanimously to ban dogs from a brand new baseball diamond. Moller Field was recently refurbished with artificial turf. City officials say dogs – especially when they dig or leave behind their waste – can damage that turf.

MEHS, Sitka wrestlers win three state titles

Sitka wrestling programs produced three champions over the weekend at the state tournament in Nikiski. The wins were not enough to put either Mt. Edgecumbe or Sitka High into the top three in team points, but coaches say their wrestlers performed well.

Holidays boost downtown revitalization effort

Folks doing their holiday shopping in downtown Sitka can enter a contest to guess the number of lights on the tree in front of St. Michael’s Orthodox Cathedral; they’ll also be able to gaze at a Christmas village in window of a closed storefront that ordinarily is dark all winter. Little changes like these are the start of what a committed group of Sitkans hope is something bigger: A more visitor-friendly town – for residents.
